Notes for Opening Session

  • These notes can be found under “opening” at the bottom of the WTF site sidebar

  • Wifi password

  • Bathrooms: more as you go down

  • Please wear your badge, can store it in the cupboards.

  • Under 18 sign release, have a professor sign. Alcohol and liability

  • (Demonstrate recording, start)

  • Open Spaces: creating discussion

    • Bill will demonstrate the app
    • A session can be anything you’re interested in, or want to know about. Even if only one person shows up you’ll have a discussion.
    • The online board is the “single point of truth.” You can almost always do things with other people if you want. Announce if you’re going to breakfast, dinner etc. and use Slack to coordinate.
    • Law of two feet: If you’re thinking it’ll be over soon…
    • Invert your participation mode. Two ears and one mouth.
    • Try not to interrupt BUT if you don’t understand something, interrupt and say so. Don’t let the discussion get away from you.
    • It’s OK to try any experiment. Example: one person requested help on python.
  • Afternoon sessions

    • Skiing, naps, etc. (it’s also a retreat)
    • Workshops (again, be creative and bold and try experiments that might meet your needs. If you need it, chances are someone else will too). Post on app as “Activity” with address.
  • Students

    • Most rental houses are available to hang out in. You never need to go home and come back.
    • Feel free to move around rental houses; check slack and the app for updates.
    • Employed attendees: buy meals for students whenever you are able.
  • Lightning talks

    • We assume it’s OK to record lightning talks for Youtube unless you say otherwise.
  • Center for the Arts

    • We want to leave a good impression with the center so we can keep using this great building
    • We are cleaning up after ourselves
    • Storage closets, cabinets
    • We can’t bring alcohol into the building (big fine)
    • Take off shoes for Jones Dance Room
  • Altitude: See the Health page.

    • It’s usually a water issue. Takes time to rehydrate
    • The Fountain for IVs, urgent care clinic at the ski area, doctor in the Ore Bucket Building. (Oxygen per Center ad)
    • Let someone know soon if you’re having trouble, don’t wait until it’s bad.
    • Take Ibuprofen if you have the slightest headache, to catch it early.
    • Alcohol is dehydrating, recommend avoiding it if you think you might have altitude issues.
  • Code of conduct, contact persons

    • On your badge: Pronouns and whether photos are ok
    • Private feedback, public reflection
    • Would you be interested in some difficult feedback?
    • Explicit permission to take care of yourself. Law of two feet writ large.
  • Hackathon day

    • Tuesday after lightning talks: form groups and decide where to meet, post on app with address.
    • If you get an idea after that, post it on the app.
  • Questions about restaurants: ask on Slack. Lunch: we recommend Momo’s, Teocalli Tamale for good and fast. Ryce and Pitas in Paradise. The Gas Cafe makes good hamburgers. Breakfast & Lunch at McGill’s is good. Paradise is good but slower. The good Thai restaurant is on the highway on the way to the mountain. The one on Elk is not recommended.

    • Announce if you’re going and form groups
  • Game nights: post on app with address.

  • Progressive Dinner Friday

    • Don’t try to make food for the whole group. You will end up with extra. The goal is to run out.
  • Saturday breakfast

  • Introductions: Your name, where you came from, what’s on your mind right now.
